The Flint Hills in Kansas have a beautiful simplicity. It can be difficult for me to capture with my camera the feeling that I have of a sense of isolation and distance, yet of a peaceful and calm environment. This stone schoolhouse is one of my favorite stops when I visit the Flint Hills. The loan tree near the building adds to the sense of isolation. This photograph is from a Flint Hills burn I photographed in 2008. The branches of the lone tree and burnt grass on the ground can be seen balanced against the very smoky background and the remnant of the fire. Night Fountain With Reeds

This is a photograph of a fountain in Olathe, KS at night with a silhoutte of reeds. It is almost like an abstract photograph with mystery reeds unless you know that there is lighting and that the glow is the spray of the water in the light. This silhouette of a ragged pine with an old barn in the background and the setting sun turning the clouds in the Kansas sky shows a sense of desolation and isolation.
